Workshops 2008

At the heart of any Social Forum are the workshops. These workshops introduce people to important social issues, are strategy sessions, provide training, and create space for people to network, exchange ideas, and/or collaborate. We expect each workshop will last no more than 2 hours.

This year there are more than 70 workshops, covering a diversity of issues, campaigns and projects. RSVP for the LA Social Forum at: LA Social Forum Registration The LASF is planned for June 27,28,29 2008

The following workshops will be held at LASF:

9/11, the growing importance of Ted Kazinski's Unabomber Manifesto, and the accelerating...
buildup of a global police-state infrastructure.

This workshop will be an in-depth analysis of the events and causes of September 11, 2001. It will review the major lies and omissions in the "Official" Report by the Kane-Hamilton 9/11 Commission. The workshop will review the work of millions of activists around the world committed to local, nation-wide and global activism to compel a new, independent and international investigation into the events and causes of Sept. 11, 2001. Finally, it will also discuss the converging factors of technological change, the underlying factors behind the 2008 Global Economic Crisis and the growth in power of the World Bank, IMF, Council on Foreign Relations and the Federal Reserve as enablers for a planned international police state. The workshop will conclude with an interactive session focused on building strategic alliance and organizing a resistance and pre-emption to counter this global police state. Several excellent video and film highlights from the movement will also be shown. Handouts will be given out.

A Vision of 21st century socialism and why capitalism has failed.

The symptoms of our current crises are all around us: global climate catastrophe, peak oil, and the host of social and physical injustices that plague our world. A society driven by profit can only exacerbate these general crises. Only a democratic, socialist transformation of our society, one driven by both the social needs of our human population and the sustainable needs of our place in the natural world, can solve these crises. The future of the human race is at stake. Our workshop deals with these crises and how, systemically, to solve them and protect humanity and the earth.

Away With All Gods! Unchaining the Mind and Radically Changing the World

Is believing in gods actually harmful? Why is there a rise of religious fundamentalism throughout the world? Can people be good without god? Bringing a unique revolutionary communist voice to the current discourse about god, atheism and morality, Avakian's book demystifies religious belief, examines how religion stands in the way of the emancipation of humanity, and interweaves the need to fully rupture with all forms of superstition and to take up instead a truly scientific approach to understanding and transforming reality.

Building Unity on the Left; From Anti-Capitalism towards a new organizational consensus

The San Diego Socialist Unity Network, with reps from 5 national organizations, has met to endorse and work to bring as many San Diegans to the LA Social forum as possible. We propose to organize a workshop; the exact title has yet to be determined. We want to lead a discussion about building unity on the left and building an organization or left front which could return the left to it historic role of spearheading movements for social change. QUESTIONS TO BE ADDRESSED: >> How and the wide-spread rejection of corporate capitalism be harnessed to make a new society possible? >> Why has left unity been so heard to achieve?

Session: W2 1:30-3:30pm Room: THH 214
