Workshops 2008 At the heart of any Social Forum are the workshops. These workshops introduce people to important social issues, are strategy sessions, provide training, and create space for people to network, exchange ideas, and/or collaborate. We expect each workshop will last no more than 2 hours.

As the housing crisis in the U.S. hits an historic all time low and residents of Los Angeles are faced with some of the highest rents and foreclosure rates in the nation, it is now more important than ever to be organized in our communities as we fight back and say NO to displacement NO to gentrification NO to Slum conditions and Homelessness and YES to Community Empowerment and REAL Social Change! We must organize and work together in a broad based alliance to create the change we need to secure affordable housing for ALL residents of Koreatown and Los Angeles.

Impeachment's Failure and Revolution as a necessary response to the capitalist takeover |

This workshop will deeply analyze the impeachment movement's successes and failures from 2007 to 2008 and the systemic crisis and the failures that the movement exposed in the workings of both the U.S. government and U.S. media. It will focus on local congressional developments, the development and organization of the Los Angeles National Impeachment Center and the strengths and limitations of both Internet and Street activist strategies used during the past two years. Brief video and film highlights from the movement will also be shown. Handouts will be give out.

Informed Enlistment: Military Recruitment and What you Can do!! |

Students in Middle, High school and college need to know vital information about enlisting in the military and all related issues. Participants will view the acclaimed documentary Arlington West that depicts the emotional cost of war and hear personal experiences dirtecly from Veterans and military families. The second part of the workshop will address what students, parents, teachers, and communities can do individually and collectively to protect student privacy and to address aggressive military recruitment tactics that target youth of color in working poor communities. Coalition Against Militarism in the Schools including students will present information about militarism in the schools, their experiences, and the alternatives.

What is alternative media and how important is in the current environment? How can the Indymedia collective do outreach and communicate in creative ways outside of the website? Discuss these ideas as well as learn to utilize the Indymedia website to publish news and participate in a true people’s media. Learn how to interview in the field, how to create articles, and how to reach millions by posting those words along with photos, sound and video to the Indymedia site.
