These workshops introduce people to important social issues, are strategy sessions, provide training, and create space for people to network, exchange ideas, and/or collaborate. We expect each workshop will last no more than 2 hours.
This year there are more than 70 workshops, covering a diversity of issues, campaigns and projects. RSVP for the LA Social Forum at: LA Social Forum Registration The LASF is planned for June 27,28,29 2008 The following workshops will be held at LASF:

Mujeres Iniciando en Las Americas |
|
Women in many parts of Central and South America are being abducted, raped, tortured and killed at an unprecedented rate and the justice system is not bringing the men who commit these crimes to justice. Women who are closely involved with the problems will make short presentations about the problem and case histories that they have seen, experienced, or talked with the survivors of these crimes. The influence of free trade agreements on these cases will also be discussed briefly. The workshop will form small discussion groups to discuss the social and economic realities of women living in a very unsafe world. The groups will explore the effects of this societal atmosphere on the self esteem and loss of sense of place, of belonging, and the economic dis empowerment that women experience under these conditions. Workshop participants will gain an increased understanding of impunity and femicide and how they affect women living in environments where they are under constant threat. Participants also will explore what we here in the U.S. can do to help solve these problems.

Race, Gender and Electoral Politics |
|
Discuss the advantages of uniting the battles against racism and sexism into one powerful force, and warn of the dangers of pitting these two "isms" against each other. Challenge the illusion that the Democratic Party--or any party rooted in our capitalist system--will liberate either people of color or women--or stop war, or end poverty. Discuss the advantages of voting socialist, and organizing for socialism, as an alternative that can truly mobilize to solve the problems caused by capitalism. Discuss how the rest of the world is eager for working people to take over the U.S. economy and society and stop U.S. wars around the globe..
