Workshops 2008

At the heart of any Social Forum are the workshops. These workshops introduce people to important social issues, are strategy sessions, provide training, and create space for people to network, exchange ideas, and/or collaborate. We expect each workshop will last no more than 2 hours.

This year there are more than 70 workshops, covering a diversity of issues, campaigns and projects. RSVP for the LA Social Forum at: LA Social Forum Registration The LASF is planned for June 27,28,29 2008

The following workshops will be held at LASF:

The All-Seeing Public Eye: How Grassroots Journalism Allows US to be the Media Now
Workshops

In this hands-on workshop, will explore the reality that thanks to our camcorders, video phones and the internet all of us can document the news that mainstream media either distorts or ignores altogether. We will address the following questions: Why isn't mainstream media enough? What is grassroots media? What is the environmental impact of personal electronics? What are the fundamentals of filming? How do you get footage online and in the public view? What is "Net Neutrality" and why is it so important? Participants will have an opportunity to play with hi-definition cameras and recreate such newsworthy events as the Rodney King beating and the UCLA tasering in order to better understand the role that grassroots journalism can play in making the world a better place.
